Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Honolulu HI

.SYNOPSIS...
Winds remain light and variable through Monday as Hurricane
Henriette passes north of the state. Land and sea breezes will
bring clear night and cloudy days across the islands, but warm and
muggy conditions continue. A low level trough will bring an
increase in clouds and showers Wednesday night into Thursday
night, followed by trades building by the end of the week.

&&

.DISCUSSION...
Hurricane Henriette is passing well north of Hawaii today, but
disrupting the trade wind flow across the islands resulting in a
sea and land breeze diurnal weather pattern. Visible satellite
shows mostly cloudy skies across the islands this onshore flow has
allowed for cloud build ups and showers across island interior. A
few of the showers have been a bit heavier with a couple lightning
strikes observed within the Big Island interior this afternoon.
Expect showers and clouds to dissipate after sunset as land
breezes push cloud cover offshore. Expect a similar setup on
Monday with possible light trades building in at the end of the
day as Henriette tracks further from the islands and high pressure
builds in. Additionally, hot and humid conditions can be expected
across most locations as dewpoint values are progged to reach and
even exceed 70 in some locations. Gentle to moderate trades with
stable conditions continue Tuesday into Wednesday.

By late Wednesday, latest model guidance depicts a low-level
trough that propagates westward into the state. Temperature
inversions across much of the state increase to near 8,000 feet
during this time, increasing cloud cover and shower trends across
the state, favoring windward and mountain areas of all islands.
This quick-moving trough continues westward and exits on the west
side of the islands by late Thursday.

Thereafter, as the weekend approaches, trades strengthen back to
moderate to locally breezy and a more typical summer-like trade
wind weather pattern will once again prevail.

&&

.AVIATION...
With Hurricane Henriette passing northeast of the state, the
trade wind belt has been disrupted, leaving light and variable
winds across the island chain that will persist through the
weekend and into early next week. This will allow for sea breezes
to develop each afternoon, bringing clouds and isolated to
scattered showers over leeward areas and island interiors, and
land breezes that will help to clear out this activity overnight.
VFR conditions will generally prevail, but MVFR conditions will be
possible in showers.

AIRMET Sierra for mountain obscuration is in effect for portions
of the Big Island`s south and east facing slopes this
afternoon as showers persist over these areas.

&&

.MARINE...
Winds remain variable to light easterly as Henriette continues on
a NW path passing N of the Hawaiian Islands. Ridging begins nosing
into the eastern waters by late Monday and then builds across the
remainder of the area by Tuesday bringing a return to moderate
trades. Winds briefly weaken Thursday as a surface trough
advances westward through the island chain.

Barber`s Point and Kaumalapau (Lanai) PACIOOS buoys indicate the
ongoing medium to long period S swell remains firmly above
guidance but peaked early this morning. The High Surf Advisory for
S shores remains in effect as is through Monday with no
adjustments necessary. Expect only small medium to long period
background pulses along S shores heading into the weekend.

Surf along E shores has increased in response to medium period
swell emanating from Henriette. This swell will decrease rather
quickly on Monday with smaller surf Tuesday into Wednesday.
A medium period northeast swell is possible by Thursday.

Small pulses maintain tiny surf along N and W facing shores.

&&

.FIRE WEATHER...
Winds will remain light and variable allowing for the development
of a land-sea breeze pattern for much of the state through
Monday. Dewpoint values are expected to gradually rise through
early next week, with many areas nearing or even exceeding
dewpoints of 70 degrees. As a result, weather conditions are
expected to remain below critical fire weather thresholds.
However, remain vigilant when recreating outdoors or when
operating equipment that could cause a spark.
